The
Irene-Anti Malaria Plus (I-AMP+) Programme adopts
an holistic approach to health and sanitation
with a strong emphasis on malaria reduction.
It is currently operating in Sekamuli, a Parish
in Luweero district. Although aimed primarily
at the most vulnerable segments in the rural
community - children under 5 and pregnant women,
the Healthy Vine Trust operates its programme
with the inclusion of the whole community and
its understanding of the programme. The Trust
also recognizes that while the provision of
nets does reduce malaria other important factors
contribute to the dis-ease of rural communities.
Therefore the programme includes the comprehensive
training of Community Health Workers to advise
families, the provision of clean water and supervision
in constructing model dwellings, so as to develop
a sense of self-reliance, achievement and awareness
into the community. Presently, with other organizations
we support a level II clinic as well as equipping
a laboratory for the secondary school and when
necessary those in dire need at the Trust's
discretion.
Sekamuli is a 10 village Parish. The programme
is divided into 3 phases:
-
Phase
1 - the initial 3 villages which was a pilot
project
-
Phase
2 - involves the inclusion of 4 villages more
and the ongoing development of Phase 1
-
Phase
3 - will include the final 3 villages to complete
the Parish of 10 and the ongoing development
of Phases 1 and 2
-
Before
each phase is initiated Community Health Workers
taken from the targeted villages are trained
over a period of 3 full weeks in basic hygiene
and sanitation methods as well as communication
and other social skills.
A
more detailed description can be found in the
programme description.
Future
plans include an extension of the clinic, an adult
literacy programme, information sessions for opinion
leaders within the community, agricultural produce
improvement and a community centre.
