A
'model dwelling' is one where the entire family
live in sound and healthy conditions through all
seasons. The building can be traditionally built
with a thatched roof or brick built with a steel
roof. In Sekamuli there is no utility water and
very limited electricity. A dwelling is constructed
of mainly natural materials and is usually built
by the family.
It includes satisfactory sleeping accommodation,
a kitchen hut with a clay stove including an external
chimney, external utensil racks, a covered pit
latrine, hand washing in the vicinity of the toilet,
an enclosed personal washing area, an animal shelter,
pits for organic and inorganic waste. The ground
around the living area needs to be free of trees,
shrubs and be kept clean.
When the model dwelling standard has been reached,
sufficient mosquito nets are provided by the Healthy
Vine Trust to protect the family.
Kitchen gardens are also encouraged so that the
family can grow crops to provide themselves with
a balanced nutritional diet.
