Model home
While the reduction of Malaria through preventative methods is at the core of The Healthy Vine Trust’s Uganda programme, without the crucial support of a health and sanitation component this would not be a viable nor sustainable programme. The Healthy Vine has introduced the model home concept. The development of a model home by the family is a key aspect of health and sanitation in the community.
This includes a cleanly swept compound, a permanent latrine with cover and door; a simple, effective hand washing device by the latrine and one by the kitchen, a dish rack off the ground; a cooking hut with a clay stove to conserve wood and reduce smoke; a kitchen garden; non-organic and organic rubbish pits; screened bathing area. Volunteer Community Health Workers (CHWs) are trained and instructed on the theoretical reasons and practical elements of maintaining a healthy and hygienic lifestyle before going and introducing this into the community. CHWs monitor, help and advise them when necessary to construct and maintain the model homes.
