Whilst there are primary schools in the parish and one secondary school many adults are illiterate. This inhibits the level of participation of many in the community. The programme aims to redress this by introducing literacy programmes for the adult population.

Illiterate parents tend to restrict the educational possibilities for their children especially girls.
